Surely You Can't be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!

An airplane tied in a knot flying in a blue, cloudy sky

nonfiction, memoir

We listened to Surely You Can't Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane! on a recent roadtrip and, as fans of the movie Airplane!, this was a great retrospective by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker, the folks who created this brilliant movie, the actors, fans and other people involved in the production.

There were times that we laughed out loud at the stories and other times that things get a little slow and bogged down with all the naval gazing. But, overall, this was a fun way to revisit the movie. Several of the stories made us want to rewatch the movie to catch some of the details they mentioned that neither of us could remember if we'd noticed before. After all, it's been a few decades since this movie was in heavy rotation when my friends would get together.

If you're a fan of Airplane! you'll enjoy this book. There's clear affection between everyone involved in the movie, even today, and I enjoyed learning how it all came together.
